Kissable Impressionable Demanding Souls – my version of what kids are.

We have them, we lose sleep over them, change our life style for them, put up with all their idiocies and have a hard time when they don’t succeed, and yet catch them when they fall – ready to give kiss and hug them assuring them that everything will be okay.

As a mom I wonder to myself – have I done the right thing, have I taught them to figure out what to do?  As my eldest is getting ready to go off to college – I know what is going on in her head – or do I?  Am I not being a helicopter parent enough?  Do I need to do everything for them or let them struggle and figure it out – after all the best way to learn is to do it your self – right?

I look around and see so many parents doing so much – and I wonder to myself – did I do enough?  But there is only so much that one can do – as long as lessons are learnt and you have had fun in the process – it is okay.  At least in my world it is.

It is said only when you become a parent do you understand the trials and tribulations of a mom – believe me – I don’t think it ends there – I am still asking my mom stuff and learning.  Kids are strong, resilient, very perceptive, learn by watching you and so you have to be careful what you do.  You have to make the tough decisions and stick to it because when it is their turn they will see how you did it and that was perfectly okay.

Does this journey get easier ass they grow older – no, not really.  As my mother says – the problems grow with the kids.  you just take it in stride.

Hey you know what.. after watching my mom i realised sometimes you just do your best and then step back and allow your kids to do some growing on their own. Allow them to make their own mistakes. Allow them to fall and figure it out for themselves. But be there for them always no matter what!

Amma always told me that she worries sometimes even when she knows she shouldn’t and she should just let it be.. and she did let it be and those were real tough times. She said i taught you to think for yourselves and i expect you to do that. I’ll always be there but i expect use the god given grey matter first!

Hee hee hee – wise woman she is – isn’t she? I love her!

  3. BTW, I love your idea of kids – “Kissable Impressionable Demanding Souls”. I think is is EXACTLY what they are, LOL!.

Kids are as it were a gift from God, even if daddy and mommy didn’t/still don’t make the right decisions in regards to them and their life. I particularly love Khalil Gibran’s rendition of what children are: this here is what was so sobering about what he said our kids are – “You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth, WOW!!!.”….

    On Children
    by Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
    Let your bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.
