Yessss! It is the feeling of utter joy that nobody can take away from you when you accomplish your goals especially when it is something totally outside your comfort zone.  It may be small or insignificant for most people but for the one who is actually doing the work and feeling the frustration it is a triumph. Now anything is possible.

I have to explain.  If you tried to get to this site in the last couple days you would have gotten a message from the server saying this is the future home.  I was in the process of moving this site to another hosting site and lets say the learning curve was pretty steep.

I feel very happy as this site is back up since I have learnt quite a bit about ftping, folders, permissions to name a few.   I am also very glad that there is google as I wade my way through the terminologies that will make me a very good database administrator by the time I am comfortable with this site.

So, I had to share my triumph with the rest of the world as I continue to forge my way through the web. Thanks for listening.

Simple pleasures

In this day and age, everything is so hurried and people don’t have time to stop and smell the roses or should I say see the hummingbirds?  It was a moment of utter joy when I saw a hummingbird near the honeysuckle.  The reason why it is a moment of triumph is I have been planting plants for butterflies and hummingbirds for a while but never had the pleasure to see one.

According to Feng Shui, the presence of birds is auspicious to the house – for it brings good luck and prosperity.  So every once in a while when I notice the absence of birds in the yard, I also notice discord in the house.  I don’t know what the reason is, but it is then that I make a conscious effort to change – both my attitude and my outlook.  it a sign to turn and look inside yourself and calm the agitation within.

Interestingly, it is the times when you are not frantically looking for the answer that it presents itself in front of you.

So, as I see this beautiful sign, I allow myself to take a moment, take a deep breath and calm the agitation within.

Life is beautiful!

Rules for Summer

If you ask a parent what are the top 5 things they would want their child to spend their time on over the summer their answer would be:

1. exercise their brain

2. exercise their body

3. practice

4. do extra homework to get ahead in school

5. learn a new skill

However if you ask a teenager what are the top 5 things they would want to spend the time on over the summer, the answer would be:

1. watch TV

2. sleep

3. do nothing

4. hang out with friends and  family

5. drive

Interesting how each choice of the parent is equivalent to an inactivity of that choice for the teenager. It is also interesting how those very same teenagers, when they become parents, have choices like those above.

Work or Play?

Have you ever come to a point in life and asked yourself – What am I doing? Where am I going?  Is this what I set out to do?  Am I happy?

I have – and many a time it is not me but someone else who has pointed that out to me.  It never did strike me what a difference it made but it did.  I think I take feedback pretty well, but that only counts if you do something about it.  Sometimes life forces you to ask those questions and figure out what the heck is life all about.  I know for a fact that Motorcity, USA had a lot of people who had to think about that when they had to make a decision whether to take the package or not.

I never understood the impact of that until my Dad, who is almost 70, said he wanted to learn music.  The thing is he decided he was going to start learning music at 60, since Rabindranath Tagore, one of the famous poets, and founder of Shanthi Niketan, started learning painting at 60.  Question – So what happened that has delayed the music project for 10 years?  Answer – following his dream of  starting his own company and making it successful.

So what is wrong with that? Nothing as long as you can still take a break to do some of the other things you have on your list.  In my mind if the work that you are doing does not allow you to take a break – then it is still work.  Maybe it is a selfish view of a daughter who wants her dad to spend time on doing other stuff – but fact remains that if you do not take time out to enjoy the small things and the milestones of the people you love, you’ve missed out big time.

So what have I learned? When you come to a milestone ask yourself the question – Is this where I want to go?  Is this where I want to be? Where do I go from here?

In answering my own question – Am I going in the right direction? Yes – it is the journey and not the destination that counts.  Am I working or playing?  Mmmm both.

Welcome to Geekdom!

If anyone had told me a few months ago that I would be spending my free time trying to figure out code – I would have laughed in their face. But now, that is exactly what I am doing. So how did that happen?

Simple.  I created my own domain and I need to know how it works.  If you already have a website I am sure you have all the bells and whistles and can track who is coming from where and how and how to get number of hits and SEO (search engine optimization, in case you were wondering).  I had it too in the other free website.  But now, it is like owning your own home versus staying in an apartment – I have the freedom to move things around the way I want – but I have to learn to do it – in another language – geek!

I figured that I could just get someone to do it for me, after all I want to spend more time doing the writing.  However in an effort to be a good communicator I need to know how things work behind the scenes.  Sure it takes a while, (it took me a while to figure out where the body tag was to put Google Analytics) but in this day and age if you own something, you have to know how it works.  Later on, you may decide to delegate the work to someone and that is okay.  So watch out for changes as I tweak this site.  Any and all suggestions are welcome.

So for all the geeks out there – I have total respect for you, as you manipulate code to make the screen look pretty. I totally agree with the tag line for Word Press – code is poetry!
